Signs your parent may need a hearing test

Hearing loss in older adults comes on slowly. They often do not notice it. You do.

  • The TV is too loudLouder than everyone else wants it.
  • Answers a different questionOr laughs along without following the joke.
  • Avoids phone callsOr hands the phone to someone else.
  • Stops going outSkips functions, temple or the park group.
  • “People mumble”Hears talking, but not the words.
  • Misses everyday soundsDoorbell, pressure cooker, phone.

A few minutes with headphones on our online hearing check. Not a diagnosis, but a good conversation starter.

Why they hear you but miss the words

Age-related hearing loss usually takes the high pitches first. Your parent may hear that someone is talking but not catch the words, especially from women, children, or anyone speaking fast. They may laugh along at the dinner table without following the joke.

Home hearing test and home visits in Electronic City

For elderly or housebound patients, an audiologist comes home. No stairs, traffic or waiting.

  • Hearing screeningA check at home to see whether a full test is needed.
  • Start the trialFit a hearing aid and begin the trial week at home.
  • Adjust or cleanTune or clean an aid your parent already has.
A home is never as quiet as a booth

Home screening is less precise. If the full test is needed, we plan a short, easy centre visit.

Areas covered and the visit fee

One of our audiologists can come to the home in and around Electronic City. Ask us whether your area is covered, and ask for a home visit when you book. The team will confirm the visit fee with you before the appointment.

Hearing aids that are easy for older hands

The smallest aid is rarely the best for a parent.

  • RechargeableCharger at night, out in the morning. No tiny batteries.
  • A size they can holdA slightly larger RIC or BTE is easier to handle and clean.
  • A large push buttonFor volume or a noisy room, found without looking.
  • Left and right coloursRed for right, blue for left.
  • Phone and TV streamingYour calls go into both ears. Some brands have a TV streamer.
  • An app for youOn many models, family can change settings from a phone.

My parent refuses to wear a hearing aid. What can I do?

Refusal usually has a reason. Find out which one.

  • “My hearing is fine”Don’t argue. Suggest a test “to check”, like an eye test.
  • “Everyone will see”Modern RIC aids are small and sit behind the ear. Let them hold one.
  • “Expensive, and they don’t work”Often a friend tried a cheap amplifier. With a trial, they hear the difference before paying.
  • “It whistles, it’s too loud”Usually poor fitting. Programming fixes it.
Talk about what they miss, not about “going deaf”

Grandchildren on video calls, the bhajan group, the TV news at normal volume.

More on helping a parent say yes

This is the most common thing grown children tell us. Hearing loss creeps in over years, so it feels normal to them. Seeing their own audiogram, explained calmly by an audiologist, often does more than any family argument. If cost is the worry, our price guide explains what each tier costs.

Come to the appointment with them if you can. An older person often takes in more when someone they trust hears the same explanation.

Many people picture the large beige aids of the past. A friend’s bad experience with a cheap amplifier or an aid that was never tuned is different from a fitted aid with a trial.

What to do during the 7-day trial week

The trial only works if the aid is worn in real life.

  1. Day 1: quiet startA few hours at home, one-to-one. Sharp sounds are normal.
  2. Days 2 and 3: build upLonger each day. TV at normal volume, a call from you.
  3. Days 4 and 5: real placesMarket, temple, a family meal. Note what was hard.
  4. Every nightWipe it, charge it, check the light. Help if needed.
  5. Days 6 and 7: the reviewBring your notes, or ask for a home visit. We adjust; you decide.
Keep a short list on your phone

“Could hear Amma on the phone”, “Wedding hall too loud”. Specific notes tune better than “it is OK”.

Hearing loss, isolation and memory

What is certain is simple: when your parent hears well, they stay in the conversation.

  • Slow withdrawalFewer calls to friends, quiet at family meals, skipped outings.
  • A link with dementiaLinked in studies with higher dementia risk. Not proof of cause or prevention.
See a doctor first if…

Hearing dropped suddenly (ENT the same day), an ear hurts, discharges or seems blocked with wax; we do not remove wax. Fast-worsening memory or confusion: see their doctor or a neurologist too.

What the research says

When hearing goes, conversation gets harder. Many older people slowly withdraw: they stop phoning friends, sit quietly at family meals and skip outings. Families often notice the loneliness before they notice the hearing.

Research has found an association between untreated hearing loss and a higher risk of dementia. The Lancet Commission on dementia lists hearing loss among the risk factors that can be changed. This is a link found in studies, not proof that hearing loss causes dementia or that a hearing aid prevents it.

Booking and cost: quick answers

Booking tips for working children

You do not have to be the patient to book. If you work in Electronic City and live nearby, a Saturday slot at either centre often works best. If you cannot be there, ask us to call you after the appointment.

Scheme aids are given through government-approved agencies and camps. Read free hearing aid schemes to see if your parent qualifies, and hearing aid prices for what each tier includes.

Questions people ask us

Is there a home hearing test for elderly people in Bangalore?

Yes. For parents and grandparents who find travel hard, a Poorvam Hearing audiologist can visit at home in and around Electronic City for a hearing screening, a hearing aid trial or an adjustment. If the screening shows that a full test in a sound-treated booth is needed, we tell you and plan the easiest way to do it.

My parent refuses to wear a hearing aid. What can I do?

Start with a hearing test, not a hearing aid. Many people say no because they expect a big, whistling aid or a hard sell. Let them hear their own result explained, then try a small rechargeable aid for a week with no commitment. Choose one situation they miss, like grandchildren on video calls, and talk about that rather than about “being deaf”.

Which hearing aid is best for elderly people?

For most older people, a small behind-the-ear aid with the speaker in the canal (RIC), rechargeable, with a push button large enough to feel. It goes into a charger at night, so there are no tiny batteries. If hands are shaky or eyesight is weak, a slightly bigger aid that is easy to hold is often better than the smallest one.

Can hearing loss cause dementia?

Research has found that people with untreated hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia, and the Lancet Commission on dementia lists hearing loss among the risk factors that can be changed. That is an association, not proof that hearing loss causes dementia, or that a hearing aid prevents it. What is clear is that hearing well keeps people in conversation and less isolated.

Can I book a hearing test for my mother or father?

Yes. Book online with your own phone number and your parent’s name, or call or WhatsApp +91 88848 64343. Tell us whether they will come to Phase 1 or Phase 2 or need a home visit, and who will be with them. If you cannot be there, ask us to call you after the appointment.

How long does it take an older person to get used to a hearing aid?

Usually a few weeks of daily wear. Older adults who have not heard clearly for years can find the first days loud or tinny. Short, regular wear in quiet rooms, building up to the whole day, works better than waiting for a big family function. We fine-tune at follow-up visits.
