Hearing aid not working? Try this first

Most "dead" aids are a flat battery, a blocked wax guard or a worn dome. Five minutes may save the trip.

  • BatteryFresh battery, sticker off a minute before closing. Rechargeable: charger light on, aid fully in its slot.
  • Wax guardThe tiny white filter at the tip fills with wax and the aid goes quiet. Swap in a new one.
  • Dome or earmouldTorn, hard or yellow domes muffle sound and whistle. Replace. Keep the earmould sound hole clear.
  • TubingBehind-the-ear aids: look for cracks, kinks, water drops or wax. Change a stiff or yellow tube.
  • MoistureSweat and humidity cause crackling and cutting out. Drying box overnight, battery door open.
  • SettingsVolume or programme pressed by mistake? Phone streaming taken over? Restart by opening and closing the door.
Aid seems fine but you hear less?

The change may be in your ears. Wax in the ear canal needs an ENT doctor. A fresh hearing test shows whether the aid needs reprogramming.

What to bring to the visit

Still quiet, crackly or whistling? Bring the aid, its charger or spare batteries, and your old domes or tubes if you have them. If the aid is from another clinic, bring any paperwork you have so we can see the model and settings.

  • Rechargeable aids that no longer hold a charge
  • Custom in-ear shells that need remaking

How long a factory repair takes depends on the brand and the part, so we give you an estimate when we send it.

If your aid is still under warranty and was bought elsewhere, the clinic that sold it is usually the quickest route for the claim. We can still check it and tell you what is wrong.

How much does hearing aid repair cost?

A clean or new dome costs little. A factory repair can cost a large share of a new aid.

Why Phonak, and GST on parts

Phonak is one of the few brands that publishes its India repair prices, so its list gives a fair idea of out-of-warranty costs across the major brands. Sometimes a new aid is the better buy, and sometimes the repair is clearly worth it.

Hearing aids are currently exempt from GST, but spare parts and accessories are taxed. We confirm on your invoice.

Battery sizes: 10, 312, 13 and 675

Batteries are colour-coded, so match the new packet to the old sticker at a glance.

Typical life assumes about 16 hours of wear a day. Bluetooth streaming drains batteries faster.
SizeSticker colourUsually fitsTypical life
10YellowVery small in-canal aids3 to 5 days
312BrownReceiver-in-canal and small in-ear aids3 to 7 days
13OrangeBehind-the-ear aids6 to 10 days
675BluePower behind-the-ear aids9 to 20 days
Make batteries last longer

Pull the sticker off and wait about a minute before closing the battery door. The battery uses air to start working, and it lasts longer if you let it. Keep spare batteries at room temperature, away from coins and keys.

Tired of changing batteries, or finding the small ones hard to handle? Ask about rechargeable models when you next look at hearing aids.

A daily routine that prevents most repairs

Wax and moisture cause most faults. A minute a day keeps the aid clear.

  • Every nightWipe with a soft dry cloth and brush the microphone openings with the kit brush.
  • Dry and rest overnightBattery door open or on the charger, in a drying box in the monsoon or if you sweat.
  • Wax guard and domeChange the wax guard when it looks blocked, the dome every one to three months.
  • Take it out firstBefore a bath, a swim, hair spray or a haircut.
  • Away from children and petsDogs in particular will chew a hearing aid.
  • Professional cleanEvery few months, more often if you make a lot of wax.
Helping a parent with the routine

If a parent wears the aid, show the routine to whoever helps them at home. Small parts like wax guards are fiddly for stiff fingers, and we are happy to show you both how to change them at your visit.

Housebound or elderly? We also offer home visits in and around Electronic City for checks and adjustments.

Questions people ask us

Where can I get a hearing aid repaired in Bangalore?

Poorvam Hearing repairs and services hearing aids at both our Electronic City centres, Phase 1 on Hulimangla Road and Phase 2 in Ananth Nagar. We see most major brands, including Phonak, Signia, Widex, Oticon, Starkey, ReSound, whether or not you bought the aid from us. Call or WhatsApp +91 88848 64343 before you come.

Is there a hearing aid service centre in Electronic City?

Yes. Both Poorvam Hearing centres, Phase 1 on Hulimangla Road and Phase 2 in Ananth Nagar, work as a hearing aid service centre: cleaning, wax guards, tubing and domes, receivers, reprogramming and diagnosis. Faults that need factory parts are sent to the manufacturer through us.

Can you repair a hearing aid I bought somewhere else?

Yes. We check, clean and service aids bought from other clinics and other cities. If the aid needs a factory repair, we tell you what is wrong and what the manufacturer is likely to charge before anything is sent. If it is still under warranty, the clinic that sold it is often the quickest route for the warranty claim.

Why is my hearing aid whistling?

Whistling is sound leaking out of the ear and back into the microphone. The usual causes are a dome or earmould that no longer fits snugly, wax in your ear canal, a cracked tube, or volume set too high. A new dome or tube often fixes it. If the whistling started after weight loss or a long gap, the fit or the programme may need adjusting.

How much does hearing aid repair cost out of warranty?

A clean and service is the cheapest fix. On Phonak’s official India list (July 2024), a general service is ₹1,180 and a factory repair on a receiver-in-canal aid ranges from ₹6,200 to ₹25,000 depending on the model tier. Other brands charge on similar lines. We tell you the likely cost before any repair goes ahead.

Which battery does my hearing aid take?

Look at the colour of the sticker on the battery packet or the old battery: yellow is size 10, brown is 312, orange is 13 and blue is 675. The size is also usually printed inside the battery door or in the user booklet. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the aid on WhatsApp.

My hearing aid got wet. What should I do?

Take it out of the ear straight away, open the battery door and remove the battery. Wipe it dry and leave it in a drying box or a dry place overnight. Do not use a hair dryer, oven or microwave. If it still sounds weak or crackly the next day, bring it in for a check.

Do you remove ear wax?

No. Wax in the ear canal should be removed by an ENT doctor. We clean the wax out of your hearing aid itself, and we will tell you if wax in your ear is the reason the aid sounds weak.

Hearing aid playing up?

Bring it to Phase 1 or Phase 2. We check it, tell you what is wrong, and quote before any paid repair.
